Durood Shareef (in Arabic Salawaat) is a way of showing respect to the prophet peace be upon him, through him Allah guided us, he has done so much for his Ummah and he was a great blessing from Allah.Durood Shareef is actually "a Du'a in praise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim), and also in the holy Qur'an we have been commanded to send Durood Shareef on the prophet.
اللّه وملآئكته يصلّون على النبىّ يآايّها الّذين آمنوا صلّوا عليه وسلّموا تسليما
(Surah Al Ahzaab: 56)
Translation of the above Aayah: "Surely Allah and His angels send blessings on the holy prophet (peace be upon him). O you who believe! Send blessings (Durood) and salutations (Salaams) on the prophet with worthy salutation". In this verse of the holy Quran, Almighty Allah, His Malaa'ikah (angels) and the Muslims have been mentioned as sending Durood upon the holy prophet. So, Durood Shareef is actually "a Du'a in praise of the holy prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)."Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the holy prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He who reads a single Durood upon me, Almighty Allah blesses him ten times, ten of his sins are forgiven, and he is increased ten times in rank. (Mishkaat-its a book of Hadeeth).
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Ma'sud (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that the holy prophet (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Qiyamah, the closest to me from among the people will be those who have read the most amount of Durood Shareef". (Tirmidhi)
